Interview with Mama and Content Creator Megan Acuna
Hi there! My name is Megan Acuna and I’m a content creator in (usually cloudy) Seattle, Washington, where I make videos and write blog posts about pregnancy and motherhood, thrifting, home decor, and style. I’m allll about keepin’ it real. Consider this my TMI warning for the entirety of my content because I’m not at all shy about discussing about “down there” after birth, mental health, or the approximately 1,000,000 times my baby pooped on me today.
1. Tell us about your experience of having your first baby during a pandemic.
It has definitely had its challenges (especially with the lack of help and inability to see family during self-isolation) but also a lot of positives! I’m so thankful that my husband has been working from home and hasn’t missed a day of our son’s life so far!
2. Now that Rowan is not a newborn anymore, what advice would you give first time mamas bringing home a baby?
Give yourself as much compassion and love as you can while transition into your new role. Remember that no one knows exactly how to be a mother until they are one! Also get a hemmoroid pillow
3. What is something about childbirth and motherhood that you did not expect?
How incredibly empowering birth is. Also that as much as you adore your baby and are obsessed and in love with them, there will still be moments where you get bored during their wake windows. Especially when they get long...babies are repetitive! People tell you to “enjoy every moment” but I think better advice is to try to be present as much as possible. It’s okay to have frustrations and hard times along with the joy and overwhelming love.
4. Is there anything you wish you could tell your pregnant self?
Don’t worry so much about what your body looks like. I know it’s difficult to feel out of control, but everything will be alright and giving birth will make you feel more confident and empowered than you ever have in your life!
5. What is your favorite part about motherhood?
Having the ability to create magical moments in my son’s day. Little family outings for walks become opportunities to learn and explore, and there’s nothing better than seeing him smile or hearing him laugh. I’ll turn myself inside out to hear that giggle!
6. Tell us about the most challenging and most rewarding things about being a full time stay at home mom and working on your YouTube channel full time?
Time management is definitely the hardest part. I think I overestimated the amount I would be able to get done while Rowan naps. I’m so thankful, though, to have all these memories recorded and easily accessible! I think in a few years it will be so special to look back on the vlogs from when Rowan was really little!
7. What inspired you to start a YouTube channel?
I’ve actually wanted to be a YouTuber since I was 14 years old! I have pictures of me at Vidcon with my favorite creators back in 2011 when I was too scared to start my own channel but desperately wanted to. Eventually when I was in college I decided that if I didn’t do it I would always wonder “what if?” Now I wish I had started sooner and continued the very first channel I punished a video on ten years ago.
8. Do you have any advice for people who are starting out in the social media world and wanting to make a career out of it?
Make content that people are searching for and optimize your content so that it shows up when they do. I wasted so much time creating videos that no one ever found! A good rule of thumb is to spend about 40% of your time creating content and at least 60% packaging it and promoting it.
9. How did you and Matt meet?
We did a Shakespeare in the park show together! Our characters didn’t end up together in the play but we did in real life!
10. What is something that a lot of people don’t know about you?
I wanted to be a theatre actress for most of my life. I also love anime which people might consider “off brand” for me, haha!
11. What are you most looking forward to for Valentine’s Day?
Having two Valentines! I’m loving being queen of the castle and having two adorable boys to love on this year 🥰
